GILLIAN GAMBOLD British, b. 1958

Gillian Gamold's work draws on the idea of an internal landscape. Flesh finds form in paint, hinting at a hidden dialogue within us. Internal structures are sometimes rendered visible, externalised but always abstracted from biology. Her work is grounded in the figurative, but tries to negotiate the water film tension where physiognomy is fractured. Anatomies are detached from reality and distinguising features reduced to symbolic rerpresentations. The fragmented bodes are thus rendered a generic quality beyond gender or social constructs.

Gillian graduated with a BA Hons from Hornsey College of Art (Middlesex University) in the early 80's. During this period she worked for a publishing company illustrating a number of books whilst also working with a gallery completing commissions for private collectors.

In the early 90's she undertook a postgraduate degree and worked as a teacher for a number of years before returning to the art world, undertaking a Masters in Fine Art at UCA in 2018. Since then, she has exhibited in a number of group shows and was an active member of an art collective before relocating.

Alongside regular exhibitions, her work has appeared at the Turner Contemporary, Margate and a large scale sculptural work 'Sebastian' was commissioned for the IMOS Foundation in Kent.
