Simon Bacon (b.1969), studied at the London Atelier of Representational Art (2011). He completed a Masters Degree in Sculptural Practice at Colchester School of Art (2013), followed by a Masters in Transpersonal Psychology and Consciousness studies.
Bacon’s sculptural work primarily reflects his evolving engagement with the interplay of physical, psychological, and spiritual themes. His practice began with an exploration of the human body using the medium of bronze to investigate surface, form, and fragility. These works sought to explore the tensions and harmonies of 'being in the world', and to address the intricate relationship between mind, body, and spirit. Over time, Bacon’s process of translating his ideas into three-dimensional form have moved beyond the more representational into more elemental forms that explore concepts of shape, space, tension, and flow. His process of making now focussing on the creation of interconnected shapes, spirals and lines of visible tension offering a sense of what he sees as both containment and expansion.
This evolution is not a departure but an instinctual deepening of his practice: As Bacon says: "The figurative provided the foundation for understanding form and structure, while abstraction allows me to delve into universal truths that transcend physical representation. By embracing this shift, my work continues to engage with the core existential ideas of fragility, harmony, and the quest for balance, grounding the abstract in the same meditative and expressive act that has always defined my approach".
He was awarded the Firstsite Collectors Award in 2014, and in 2013 Bang & Olufsen mounted a solo exhibition of his work, Art and Living, presented at Bang & Olufsen’s Colchester gallery. Bacon has also been included in many group exhibitions throughout the UK, including: Art at the Park, Braxted Park (2024); Summer Exhibition, Sculpt Gallery, Essex (2024); Sculpture Art Trail, Marks Hall Estate (2024); Christmas Exhibition, Thompson Gallery, London (2024); Battersea and Hampstead Affordable Art Fairs, London, (2024, 2023, 2021); Visual Variations: Figurative to Abstract, NoonPowell Gallery, Notting Hill, London (2020); Christmas Exhibition, NoonPowell Gallery, Notting Hill, London (2020); Out of this World, Thompson's Gallery, London (2019); London Art Fair (2019); Summer Exhibition, The Minories Gallery, Colchester (2018); London Art Fair (2018); 35th Annual Exhibition, Thompson's Gallery, Aldeburgh (2017); Art 50 Exhibition, Sculpt Gallery (2017); Are you interested in bodies?, Sentinel Gallery, Wivenhoe (2017); The Art of Casting, Sculpt Gallery (2015); A Year in Review, Lacey Contemporary Gallery (2015); Autumn Exhibition, Thompson's Gallery, Aldeburgh (2015); Open Studios, Sculpt Gallery (2015); Sentinel Gallery, Wivenhoe (2015); Affordable Art Fair, Battersea, London (2014); Bacon Fenn & Moran: A Dedication to Form, Lacey Contemporary Gallery, London (2014); Shaping The Future: Simon Bacon & Lucy Lutyens, Sculpt Gallery (2014); and The Brick Lane Gallery, London (2013).
